When to go to Venice

Venice is two cities. The cruise-passenger Venice (St Marks plus the Rialto, 10am to 5pm) and the actual Venice (everywhere else, before 9am and after 7pm). The right month is one where you can walk the smaller sestieri (Cannaregio, Dorsoduro, Castello) without dodging acqua alta or summer heat.

Tips for Venice

Carnival (February) is unique. Pack a coat plus a mask. Hotels triple but worth it once.
Skip St Marks restaurants. Walk 10 minutes into Cannaregio for proper cicchetti.
Vaporetto night passes are cheaper than gondolas and the canals are empty after 11pm.
